Making the recreations

You can use git to download the repo to your computer.

git clone https://github.com/ajstarks/dubois-data-portraits

Each plate has its own directory, for example plate27, and in the the directory is the bash script mkdeck which will create both a PDF (f.pdf) and PNG (f1.png) version of the plate.

cd plate27
./mkdeck

The mkdeck script uses a shell script pdf which should be in your $PATH.

#!/bin/bash
pdfdeck -stdout "$@" - > f.pdf

Also, each directory contains the original image of the plate, for example original-plate-27.jpg

The scripts assume some envrionment variables to be set. For Mac (for example zsh) and Linux (bash), use these lines in your shell's startup file:

export duboisans=PublicSans-Regular
export duboiserif=PublicSans-Bold
export duboismono=Inconsolata-Medium
export portrait=1584,2016
export landscape=2016,1584
